Mitchell County Fair 4-H/FFA Ribbon Auction raises $32,250
The participation of 23 buyers made the 2006 Mitchell County Fair's annual 4-H/FFA Ribbon Auction another resounding success this year, according to a press release issued Monday morning from the Mitchell County Extension Office. The event raised a total of $32,350, topping last year's tally of $28,500.
A total of 109 ribbons were auctioned, bringing an average price of $296.84 compared to 121 ribbons auctioned last year averaging $235.61 per ribbon. Additional donations to the 4-H Ribbon Fund were received from First Citizens National Bank, Home Trust and Savings Bank, C US Bank, and Johnson Chemicals all of Osage, for youth activities in the county.
Area auctioneers supported the program by donating their time to call the auction. Auctioneers were: Dean Eastman and Don Huntington, both of Riceville, Bob Glassel, St. Ansgar; Jack Steiert, Little Cedar; and Jon Witt, Osage. Farm Credit Services of America clerked the sale.
The results by species are as follows:
Beef - 47 ribbons sold averaging $315.32 per ribbon
Swine - 44 ribbons sold averaging $351.71 per ribbon
Dairy - two ribbons sold averaging $130 per ribbon
Sheep - 16 ribbons sold averaging $112.50 per ribbon
The Ribbon Auction was managed by a committee comprised of members of the Fairboard, 4-H & Youth Committee, a 4-H leader and a ribbon buyer. Members include: Dale Anderson, Galen Barker, Shawn Berg, Nancy Theis, Lisa Cockrum, Kari Schwarting, and Rick Sletten, all of Osage; and Karl Fox, Elma.
A promotion campaign was conducted prior to the fair. In addition, successful bidders were provided a packet that contained a picture of the exhibitor and his/her project, plus a certificate and ribbon. Many volunteers took the pictures and prepared the packets.
A 10% commission was deducted from each ribbon sale to pay for the cost of promotion. The balance of these funds will be used to provide educational experiences for 4-H members in the county. The FFA chapters will receive the balance of their ribbons sold for their projects.
