Three youths competing for Miss Osage 2008 title

The 2008 Miss Osage Contest, sponsored by the Osage Chamber of Commerce, has taken another step forward this month. With the deadline last week, three candidates have officially entered the contest.

They include Amy Nicole Emerson, Hope Holm and Serene Faith Younker. Profiles of the three young ladies are printed below. The three candidates start their competition in the coming weeks as each are required to perform a community service project during the month of April and to create a scrap book of the project.

In order to prepare the girls, Kristine Ward, the anchor for "Daybreak" on KIMT Channel 3 will speak to them at a special community workshop to be held Monday, March 24 at the Osage Public Library.

In addition to community service, each candidate will be required to write a 250-word essay on one of the following issues:

1) What do you see as the greatest challenge facing small communities?

2) If you were running for the presidency, what would be your platform?

Miss Osage 2008 will be crowned during the Town and Country Banquet in the band shelter at City Park on Friday, July 4. Awards for First Runner-Up, Community Service, Essay and Miss Congeniality will be given.

The 2008 Miss Osage will receive a scholarship to the college of her choice. The winner for this year's event will also participate in the Miss Mitchell County during the county fair.

Candidate profiles are as follows:

Serene Faith Younker, age 17, is the daughter of Curt and Angie Younker of Osage. She has a brother Curt Younker II.

Serene's work experience includes cleaning at Dungey's, Hardee's (frontline) and Nature's. School activities included Band, Best Buddies (president), football and basketball varsity cheerleading (captain), trapshooting, school play and variety show.

Community activies and Organizations she is involved with are Girls Scouts (12 years), Dancing (15 years) and church activities.

Her hobbies are dancing and being with family and friends.

Serene's favorite saying is "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain."

Her favorite thing to do in Osage is go to the Movie Theater.

Younker's future goals are to graduate at the top of her class from Mercy College of Health Sciences with a degree in surgical technology, get married, have a family and stay in Iowa.

Amy Nicole Emerson, age 18, is the daughter of Kirk and Lisa Emerson of Osage.

Family members are Sara and Alex.

Amy works at the Osage Public Library. She has also babysat for family and family friends.

School activities include four years of band, being a wrestling manager for three years and has helped with the lights at school plays and musicals. She is also involved with the Big Brother/Big Sister program.

Amy's community activities and the organizations she is involved in are being a member of 4-H and Girl Scout Troop 241. She is involved in the church youth group, is a member of the church choir, and a Sunday school teacher.

Hobbies are socializing, reading, playing the flute and piano.

Amy's favorite saying is "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." FDR.

Three words that describe her are reliable, respectful and bubbly.

Favorite things to do in Osage are check out movies from the library and watch them with friends.

Emerson's future goals include getting her undergraduate degree from Wartburg and continue to graduate school for a masters degree. She would like to come back to the area.

Hope Holm, age 17, is under the guardianship of her sister Amanda Wagner.

Her family members are a brother-in-law Jason Wagner and a niece, Emma.

She lists as her work experience, the Osage Bowl/Crossover Restaurant.

School activities included Student Council, FFA, NHS, SADD, chorus, technical crew for many plays and musicals.

Hope is involved in community activities and organizations including the Bridges Mentoring Program, Osage United States Bowling Association Women's Bowling Association-Maple League.

Her hobbies are bowling, crafts and reading.

Hope's favorite saying is "Leadership is an action, not a position."

Three words that describe her are understanding, punctual and realistic.

Her favorite things to do in Osage are bike rides and walks with her friends in the summer time.

Holm plans to graduate from Wartburg College with a degree in chemistry or biochemistry. She hopes to find a career in which she can help to improve people's quality of life.
