New gazebo for county care facility

It all began in the middle of June, Emma White of St. Ansgar, decided to donate her used Gazebo to the residents at Mitchell County Care Facility.

The residents really enjoyed their time spent in the Gazebo. Staff would find them outside having snacks and drinks while enjoying the outdoors. They also enjoyed playing cards in the early evenings when all could join in, as some of our residents go to job sites during the day.

The week before the 4th of Julym the residents had a really good idea. They decided to decorate the gazebo with light, as it would add to their entertainment while watching the fireworks outside that Mitchell displayed. This began a busy project of using old Christmas lights. Well, guess what? A few days before the 4th of July there was a bad windstorm. That day while the residents were eating about 5:30 p.m. they watched their Gazebo fly away, and land on top of the roof, now with a torn canvas and a bent frame, their Gazebo was destroyed; beyond repair. This was a sad day for all.

It was then I decided I would ask Peggy Hanson, our administrator if I could have permission to distribute donation cans at various places in Osage and St. Ansgar. I began with Casey's, Hardee's, Spahn & Rose Lumber Yard, Food Pride, Osage and Sportsman's Restaurant in St. Ansgar.

As days went by we began to see funds accumulate from our efforts.

Then on July 30, 2008, we at MCCF received a phone call from the Webers of Napa donating $100. The next day we were thrilled with another donation of $150 from Greg Larsen, owner of Food Pride. As of now, I had not told the residents about my mission to help them get a new gazebo. At this time we had accumulated enough money to buy a new gazebo and two new lawn rocking chairs. When the announcement was made, we saw residents jumping up and down smiling and clapping their hands.

The residents and staff thank all of you that chose to donate to our new gazebo and chairs.
