Harvest Moon Festival set Saturday
A new fall event called the Harvest Moon Festival will take place this Saturday, Oct. 11 in Osage. A creation of the members of the Osage Chamber of Commerce, the many activities offered at the new event are intended to bring people together.
"The Retail Committee of the Osage Chamber of Commerce realize that one of the best ways to promote Main Street businesses and the community is to have activities that bring people to Main Street from our town and surrounding communities," explained Osage Chamber Director Wendy Heuton.
The Harvest Moon Festival will be held on Main Street with activities that all age groups can enjoy and participate. Activities of the day include:
Ag Olympics hosted by the Osage FFA will take place on 6th Street between Main Street and State beginning at 9 a.m. The two person team events are: Straw Bale Toss, Corn Shucking, Raw Egg Toss, Wheel Barrow Race, and Tire Roll. There are three age group divisions: 5 to 10 years; 11-15 years; and 16 through adult. Teams do not have to be of the same gender. First, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons will be given to each age group for each event.
The Pie Baking Contest along with the Farmers Market and Bake Sale will take place in the parking lot next to H&R Block. Three categories of pies will be judged: Cream, Custard and Fruit. Contestants may enter one pie in each category if they wish with a first place prize given to each category. Entry forms with rules are available at City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce. Judges are from Osage and surrounding communities. Pies to be sold by the slice after judging is completed. Any club, organization, or private individual interested in selling items at the Farmers Market and Bake Sale is welcome.
In the Home Trust and Savings parking lot kids can have their faces painted by Kyera Reams and the Buerckleys will sell pumpkins and the decorating supplies are provided by the Chamber of Commerce.
Festive foods to savor are being sold by the Osage Warhawks 4-H Club, Dads Donuts and Cotton Candy, and Mountain Man Kettle Corn from Des Moines. From 2 to 5 p.m., the Bel Aire Estates Winery and Worth Brewing Company are having a tasting of their locally made wines and ale. Behind the Home Trust and Savings Bank enjoy a horse drawn wagon ride through the streets of the City of Maples and view the beautiful fall colors. The Pitzens from Stacyville are bringing their wagon and team of horses offering rides around Osage.
The amateur talent show is just for fun and there's still time to sign up and share special talents with others. Come to the parking lot next to Arts Shoes and enjoy vocalists, a pianist, mini dance recital and a tae kwon do demonstration.
There is still time to enter the pie contest, Ag Olympics, Farmers Market and Bake sale, and amateur talent show. There is no charge to enter the contests or have a space at the Farmers Market and Bake Sale. For more information contact the Osage Chamber at 641/732-3163.
