Students tour Mitchell County industries
by David Namanny, Press-News Editor
The Mitchell County Economic Development Commission (MCEDC) hosted a special tour of business and industry last week across Mitchell County. Junior and senior high school students from Osage, St. Ansgar and Riceville schools were the guests of the tour, which was intended to expose them to the various career opportunities available in Mitchell County, as well as the required skills involved in working for local businesses and industries.
Students were asked to select one of the five career tracks including healthcare, advanced manufacturing, food processing, energy and retail. The students were broken up into groups and visited a total of three businesses and industries within their specific track.
Among the tours were the Stacyville Community Nursing Home and Apple Valley Assisted Living Complex, Absolute Energy LLC, Fox River Mills, L.R. Falk Construction, Grain Millers, Inc., Wold Rim & Wheel, Tops, Malt O Meal, Milkhouse Candles, RENEW Energy, RR Donnelley, and the Iberdrola Wind Farm (Barton Township).
Retailers visited by the students included Flemings Clothing, Flower Gallery, 4th Street Coffee, Radio Shack, Sculpture, S & S Locker, and Turtle Creek Trading Company.
"The goal of the event was to expose students to the wonderful business and industry that call Mitchell County home,"said Brenda Dryer, MCEDC Executive. "Our hope is that by involving our youth early, educating them of the job possibilities in the area we might grow and retain our population and provide the needed workforce for our business and industry to expand here."
Students on the tour also had the opportunity to learn more about business planning as they attended a workshop being sponsored by NIACC at the new Cedar River Events Center in Osage.
More than 250 students and a total of 21 local business and industries participated in the event.
